Mission

To train Prehospital Care Technologists with technical-scientific competencies, capable of acting under the principles and ethical values of respect, freedom, integrity and commitment to peace, attending processes of promotion, prevention, health management and intervention in emergency situations, emergencies and disasters through the application of theoretical and practical knowledge that allow them to become critical, innovative, transforming, proactive agents, willing to work as a team to face and solve situations typical of Prehospital Care.

Vision

The Technology in Prehospital Care of the Universidad del Valle by 2020 will be a higher education program of excellence that contributes to the continuous improvement of the health sector, especially in emergency care, emergencies and disasters, for the benefit of the community and the productive sector of the country, being recognized nationally and internationally as leaders in the technical-scientific development in prehospital care.

 

General Objective

To train technologists in pre-hospital care who perform their work according to the national pre-hospital context, intervening in aspects such as health promotion, disease prevention, emergency and urgent care, as well as mitigation, intervention and rehabilitation of disasters.

Specific Objectives

  • To train a technologist in the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the diagnostic, therapeutic and standard monitoring approach in the care of patients in urgent or emergency conditions in the pre-hospital setting.
  • To train a technologist in the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the diagnostic, therapeutic and standard monitoring approach in the care of patients in urgent or emergency conditions in the hospital emergency service setting.
  • To ensure that students acquire the basic knowledge and skills for planning, managing and participating in search and rescue operations.
  • To train a technologist in the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies, strategies, plans, programs, regulations, instruments, measures and permanent actions for the knowledge and reduction of risk and disaster management in order to contribute to the safety, welfare, quality of life of people and sustainable development.
  • Perform actions of promotion, prevention, care, coordination, intervention and management in emergency situations, emergencies and disasters, as a member of interdisciplinary teams, through:
    - Formulation and implementation of prevention and intervention plans in health institutions, community and business organizations.
    - The evaluation and promotion of changes in the context that benefit the population with a health management approach.
    - Pre-hospital intervention performing basic and advanced support in patients with medical and traumatic pathology according to current standards and protocols.
    - Participation in the construction, organization and implementation of contingency plans.
    - Participation in groups and lines of research in prehospital care.

  • Support in the initial care of patients with medical and traumatic pathology in the hospital emergency department.

  • Act in accordance with the socio-political, legal, cultural and ethical context in situations related to emergency care, emergencies and disasters, in such a way as to strengthen coexistence and respect for human rights.

  • Perform analysis of potential consequences related to risk situations considering technical, administrative and operational aspects that allow their prevention, preparation, mitigation and control from the work environment.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary groups related to occupational health and safety that enhance their knowledge, skills and abilities leading to the improvement of the worker's quality of life.

  • Lead training programs for health human talent in the area of pre-hospital care.

Graduates of the Prehospital Care Technology academic program can work in the following positions:

  • Crew member of ambulances and emergency response vehicles.
  • Participate in the planning, creation, assessment and coordination of programs for the classification of patients based on their degree of urgency.
  • Coordinator or member of the municipal councils for disaster risk management.
  • Coordinator and operator in the centers of regulation and dispatch of emergencies, emergencies and disasters.
  • Active member in education and training programs for health human resources in the area of pre-hospital care, institutional and community brigades.
  • Part of the interdisciplinary teams oriented to planning, consulting and research initiatives aimed at promoting the development of new knowledge and techniques in prehospital care.

The program includes the following areas of knowledge: basic natural sciences, basic health sciences, socio-humanistic and cultural education, organized in subjects that allow for the permanent integration of theory and practice.

The basic guidelines of the program allow contributing to the economic, social and cultural development of Valle del Cauca by training and educating technologists who contribute to the development of the pre-hospital field in the region and in the country. Since its inception, the program has sought to formulate a curriculum that ensures that students acquire attitudes, skills and abilities that enable them to work in multiple scenarios and in an interdisciplinary manner in the context of pre-hospital care, with a high sense of social responsibility.

The Academic Program Technology in Prehospital Care, attached to the School of Medicine of the Faculty of Health of the Universidad del Valle, will grant the title of Technologist in Prehospital Care to students who have passed the requirements defined in Resolution 076-2015-CA and Resolution 108-2001 CA, and completed a total of 86 academic credits.
