Doctor in Health

The academic program of Doctorate in Health was created on May 31, 2013 by resolution No. 03 of the Superior Council of the Universidad del Valle. The name and curriculum were established in resolution No. 056 of May 9, 2013 of the Academic Council, which states, article No. 2, that the general objective of the program is to train autonomous researchers of the highest level, with the ability to propose, direct and carry out studies that lead to the generation of interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge in Health, as well as solve problems for the country in the area of ​​Health.


Calls for applicants are opened annually in the second half of the year, in the months of September/October. After passing the call process, academic activities begin in the first semester of the year, period February - June.

The Doctorate in Health proposal is a novel offer in the field of advanced education in the country and responds to needs identified at the local, regional, national and international level in four basic aspects:

  1. Understand health as a complex problem that requires systemic solutions and interventions.
  2. Generate knowledge and innovation through advanced research in the field of health.
  3. Increase the number and quality of its doctors in the country.
  4. To urgently train leaders and decision makers with the necessary skills to effectively contribute to transforming health conditions in the communities of the country or wherever required, making use of multi, inter and transdisciplinarity.

In this way, the academic Doctorate in Health program responds to a need to transform the way of addressing community health, emphasizing research that promotes the promotion and maintenance of the health of subjects and their communities. To this end, a multi, inter or transdisciplinary approach is opened that brings together researchers from different disciplines to contribute to the study of health, with a holistic vision based on the Social Sciences, Humanities and the field of health. This order of ideas, the Doctorate aims to advance in the construction of objective conditions and build its own experience, to achieve interdisciplinary work and later transdisciplinary in its work. 

Professional Profile

The graduate of the Doctorate in Health will be able to:

  • Carry out disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research in health in an autonomous manner through research groups, research centers and/or institutions providing health services.
  • Propose innovations in approaches and training of human resources through research.
  • Propose alternative solutions to political, cultural and social problems that affect the health of people and communities.
  • Participate in the planning, development and evaluation of human talent training programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Critically appropriate theoretical knowledge and the management of research methods to support the generation of health knowledge.
  • Critically analyze scientific health literature
  • Plan, execute and evaluate health policies that seek to maintain or restore the health of individuals, groups and communities.
  • Understand and assume their ethical and professional responsibility and frame all their actions within the values, principles and commitments that define the Ethos of the Universidad del Valle, ethics and bioethics in health.

Occupational Profile 

  • Graduates of the Doctorate in Health may work in Institutes, Centers and/or Research Groups leading health research with multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary groups.
  • Manage health intervention programs and as well as research centers linked to both educational and healthcare institutions.
  • To be consultants and advisors for the design, application and evaluation of health policies that promote the improvement of quality of life and health at both the individual and population levels.
  • Hold management positions with responsibility for making decisions related to individual, community and/or population health.
  • Promote and disseminate scientific production that allows the transfer and application of research findings in the operation of the health system, as well as in the processes for generating knowledge.

The Academic Doctorate Program in Health has a flexible, individualized, research-focused curricular structure based on a credit system. A total of at least 90 credits is required, of which 18 correspond to the Interdisciplinary Foundation component; 12 to the Foundation of the Field of Knowledge component; 50 to the research component and the Electives component.

To qualify for the title of Doctor of Health, it is required:

  • Take and pass a minimum number of 90 credits.
  • Have passed the subjects and activities of your program with a cumulative average greater than or equal to 75% of the current grading scale.
  • Be a Candidate for the title of Doctor, which implies having passed the qualifying exam.
  • Have written, supported and approved the Doctoral Thesis.
  • Have published or had an original research article accepted for publication in an indexed scientific journal. The article must deal with a chapter, chapters, or part of a chapter of the doctoral dissertation and the student must be the first author of it.
  • Be at peace and safe in all respects with the Program and the University.
  • Have been a regular student of the program at the Universidad del Valle for the minimum time established by the general postgraduate regulations that are in force..
  • Cumplir con los requisitos estipulados en las normas de la Universidad del Valle vigentes para programas de Doctorado.
