The first doctorate in Bioengineering in the country is inter-institutional between the Universidad Autonoma de Occidente with its faculties of Engineering and Basic Sciences and the Universidad del Valle with its faculties of Health, Engineering and Natural and Exact Sciences.
This program aims to train doctors with transdisciplinary skills and high academic quality, promote development and innovation in the various frontier areas of engineering related to industrial, chemical, biological and biotechnological processes, so that the region and the country develop scientific and technological capabilities, that positively impact people's quality of life and economic development.
Admission considers professionals in natural and exact sciences, engineering, health areas, agronomy, veterinary medicine and related areas, interested in acquiring training as researchers, who seek to generate new knowledge in the holistic solution of problems in bioengineering with an interdisciplinary vision. In this order of ideas, the Doctorate in Bioengineering aims to:
It arises from the need for replacement of organs and tissues, which in the population is greater every day. The future of health treatments requires an interdisciplinary team of professionals capable of preventing disease from nutraceuticals, regenerating tissues and organs by combining biomaterials with the appropriate cells, and creating pharmacological treatments from pharmacogenomics, adjusted to each individual patient.
This area, established like all the others of the Doctorate based on the accumulated experience of years of research, tends towards the development of techniques, devices, equipment and protocols that allow offering more efficient diagnostic support, quality assurance and patient safety in institutions, hospital, development of aids for rehabilitation and inclusion of patients with disabilities, offering definitive solutions to technology needs to improve quality of life.
Environmental Biotechnology in particular is able to take on the challenge represented by the quality of surface and groundwater, soil and air, which are under continuous threats due to the intense use of these resources in industrial and artisanal productive activities. The management of these threats and their prevention through bioengineering tools are the pillar on which the sustainability and habitability of the region and the country rest.
The needs of the national and regional productive apparatus associated with agricultural activities and food production represent an important area in the country. Bioengineering applied to the management of crops and their waste, fishing chains, the production of inputs and food for animals, could allow food independence and security and the possibility of transformation, generating added value to the products, positively impacting the productivity of the region.
