Train researchers capable of organizing and directing biomedical research with integrity, responsibility, transparency and rationality, which contribute to the development of science, health and well-being of the country and the region.

The Academic Master's Program in Biomedical Sciences aims to train researchers with the skills to carry out biomedical research in a directed manner and with preparation for a doctoral level, after which they could carry out research autonomously.

The Registration and Admission Process is carried out taking into account the dates and procedures established by the academic calendar issued by the Academic Vice-Rector's Office, in addition to the specific dates and procedures established by the Academic Program.

For each open call, the maximum number of new admitted students may not be greater than 30 nor less than 15. If the Academic Program does not complete the established minimum quota, it will not be able to begin academic activities in that period, in which case, the admitted applicants will retain the quota only until the next admission call in which the quota is filled.

Applicants may register for only one research group, which they must indicate in their registration form. Applicants are recommended to contact the Research Groups of the School of Basic Sciences before registering.

Occupational Profile

The graduate of the Master's Degree in Biomedical Sciences will be able to engage in research in secondary education, higher education, research institutes and entities that finance research programs and projects.

With the skills developed, you will be able to carry out biomedical research in a directed manner, in addition to having the knowledge and experience to enter a doctoral level, after which you could carry out research autonomously.

The curricular structure of the Academic Master's Program in Biomedical Sciences is composed of three components: 

1. Basic component (16 academic credits). Aimed at providing the basic theoretical and methodological foundation necessary to carry out biomedical research.
2. Research component (21 academic credits). Aimed at providing the basic practical and methodological foundation necessary to carry out biomedical research. The student is guided in the critical review of scientific literature related to their area of ​​research. Likewise, the student is trained in the written and oral dissemination and support of their scientific results.
3. Elective component (15 academic credits). Aimed at providing theoretical and methodological foundations to support the development of the research component of the Program. These subjects are defined by each student's tutor, according to the academic training needs required for the development of their research project.

To qualify for the Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences, the following are required:

• Take and pass a minimum number of 52 credits.
• Have passed the subjects and activities of the Program with a cumulative average greater than or equal to 70% of the current grading scale. In no case may the total weighted average be less than three point five (3.5).
• Have developed, presented, supported and approved a directed Research Work that complies with the internal regulations of the Academic Program.
• Be at peace and safe in all respects with the Program and the University.
• Have been a regular student of the Program at the Universidad del Valle for at least two (2) academic semesters or its equivalent.
• Have passed at least 60% of the current grading scale, the advanced exam in the English language administered by the School of Language Sciences of the Universidad del Valle.
• Comply with the other requirements stipulated in the current regulations that the Universidad del Valle has in force for Research Master's programs.

The School of Basic Sciences was formed in 1994, with the aim of promoting the integration of teachers and students from different basic disciplines in the health area. It currently has two postgraduate academic programs: Master in Biomedical Sciences and Doctorate in Biomedical Sciences and is made up of three Departments:

1. Department of Morphology (Histology, Anatomy, Embryology and Genetics).
2. Department of Physiological Sciences (Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Physiology and Pharmacology).
3. Department of Microbiology (Bacteriology, Immunology, Mycology, Parasitology and Virology).

In 2000, the Master's Program in Basic Sciences was created, attached to the Faculty of Health, in which it was decided to unify the Master's programs in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Immunology, Microbiology and Morphology.

Starting in 2008, the Superior Council of the Universidad del Valle changed the name of the Program to a Master's Degree in Biomedical Sciences. Currently, the Academic Program has Qualified Registration for a term of seven (7) years, granted through Resolution No. 6278 of 2016, issued by the Ministry of National Education.
