Why study the Specialization in Neonatal Nursing?

The nursing specialization programs at Universidad del Valle are distinguished by the development of differential projects that promote the development of skills for clinical decision-making and the permanent improvement of specialized nursing care from strategic management. 

To train specialized nursing professionals, experts in the comprehensive care of healthy newborns and those with low, medium and especially high-risk health problems, taking into account the participation of the family and its sociocultural context. In addition, it aims to promote applied research among nursing professionals responsible for newborn care and to comprehensively develop the professional as a human being.

  • Legible and valid identity document.
  • Undergraduate and graduate professional degrees (the latter, if applicable).
  • Undergraduate and graduate transcript (if applicable), with cumulative average indicating the minimum and maximum value of the grading system used.
  • Updated resume, with supporting documents.
  • One (1) recent photograph, 3 x 4 cm in size, white background, taken from the front.

The selection of applicants for postgraduate academic programs considers a rating range between 0 and 100 points, assigned based on the results obtained in the following criteria, according to each type of program as well:

At the end of the Program, the professional specialized in Neonatal Nursing will be able to:

  • Provide comprehensive care to newborns and their families to promote their health, prevent problems, restore health, and maintain better living conditions. Their knowledge and skills enable them to care for critically ill newborns, provide health education, and articulate specialized care with primary care. They may also participate in the creation of new programs.
  • Assess the child's health status, as well as his or her ability to carry out diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and responsibility to make decisions regarding the treatment of newborns. These functions must be assumed with clinical, social and ethical responsibility, carrying out teamwork, both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, with the participation of the family, which allows them to provide comprehensive care of optimal quality.
  • Approval of all the subjects of the corresponding study plan.
  • Passing the English proficiency exam, according to the Department of Foreign Languages ​​of the School of Language Sciences, Faculty of Humanities of the Universidad del Valle.

The specialization program in Neonatal Nursing was approved by Resolution 110 of October 23, 1991 of the Superior Council of the Universidad del Valle, and by Agreement No. 052 of March 19, 1992 of the ICFES.

The Neonatal Nursing specialization program was opened in 1993, with the support of the Kellog Foundation, with ten national and international students. For the development of the first cohort, some foreign professors and medical professionals specialized in this field of pediatrics were invited.

The purpose of the program was to train professionals who are experts in the care of newborn children with health problems at different levels of care and to promote their development as people.

Consistent with the purpose, the Curriculum of the program was designed in three areas: professional, investigative and social humanistic.
