Why study the Specialization in Maternal Perinatal Nursing?

The nursing specialization programs at Universidad del Valle are distinguished by the development of differential projects that promote the development of skills for clinical decision-making and the permanent improvement of specialized nursing care from strategic management.

 

In accordance with the Mission and Vision of the School of Nursing, the Academic Program of Specialization in Maternal Perinatal Nursing poses the following objective:

  • To train nursing professionals at the postgraduate level with ethical attitudes, in-depth knowledge, specialized skills, critical thinking and social commitment, experts in the comprehensive health care of women of childbearing age and their partners, pregnant women, their newborns, women in the postpartum and menopause period, within the framework of different levels of complexity, taking into account family participation and the sociocultural context.
  • Legible and valid identity document.
  • Undergraduate and graduate professional degrees (the latter, if applicable).
  • Undergraduate and graduate transcript (if applicable), with cumulative average indicating the minimum and maximum value of the grading system used.
  • Updated resume, with supporting documents.
  • One (1) recent photograph, 3 x 4 cm in size, white background, taken from the front.

The selection of applicants for postgraduate academic programs considers a rating range between 0 and 100 points, assigned based on the results obtained in the following criteria, according to each type of program:

 

Graduate Profile

The specialist at the Maternity Perinatal School of the Universidad del Valle  is a professional trained in the academic discipline that has the capacity to:

  • Caring for the health of women of childbearing age and their partners, pregnant women, newborns, women in the postpartum period and their families, whether or not they have health problems, based on the principles and values ​​of human care.
  • Critically conceptualize the health situations of people under their care, in accordance with the objective and subjective findings of the assessment, making reasoned and coherent decisions based on research evidence.
  • Use nursing technology and techniques safely and correctly during your practice, respecting the dignity and integrity of the people under your care.
  • Innovate maternal and perinatal health care by planning, executing and evaluating interventions that provide solutions to care situations in different settings and levels of care.
  • Promote work with other disciplines to identify, analyze and solve common problems that improve the health of the mother and her newborn.
  • Critically evaluate research products and transfer interventions with sufficient evidence to professional practice to improve the quality and safety of maternal perinatal care.

 

Occupational Profile

Graduates of the Maternal Perinatal Nursing Specialization program can perform professional tasks such as:

  • Nurse specializing in sexual, reproductive and perinatal health care at different levels of complexity of health services, in educational institutions, territorial entities, private companies and communities.
  • Directors, managers, coordinators or leaders of health and/or nursing services, programs and projects in sexual and reproductive health or perinatal health in the different territorial entities and non-governmental organizations.
  • Professor at public and private universities and institutes of higher education.
  • Member of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research groups.
  • Independent practicing nurse specialist.
  • Approval of all the subjects of the corresponding study plan.
  • Passing the English proficiency exam, according to the Department of Foreign Languages ​​of the School of Language Sciences, Faculty of Humanities of the Universidad del Valle.

The Maternal Perinatal Nursing Specialization program was approved by Resolution 108 of 1991 of the Superior Council of the Universidad del Valle, and by Agreement 051 of 1992 of the ICFES.

The Maternal-Perinatal Nursing Specialization Program began in 1967 with the training of nurse-midwives, with the purpose of preparing clinical experts who would assume leadership in teaching and service in the maternal-child area. This specialization was offered until 1977, supported by PAHO and the Ministry of Health, through the Latin American Center for Teaching and Research in Maternal-Child Nursing.

In 1993, specialization programs were offered with the support of the Kellog Foundation, in the clinical areas of professional practice such as Nephrology, Neonatal, Maternal Perinatal and Family Health. For the development of the first cohort of students, some foreign teachers and medical professionals in the different fields of specialization were invited.
