Mission

It is guided by basic principles of the University of Valle to generate knowledge and transmit them looking for scientific solutions to different problems of society.

Orthopedics and Traumatology, which studies pathology of entire musculoskeletal system, has been constituted as a branch of basic and necessary medicine of any community health system.

Study, analysis and treatment of all traumatic pathologies, fractures and dislocations, are priorities in any developing society. The high rates of traffic and work accidents, and the permanent incidence of violence in all its expressions, continuously generate situations that increase trauma of musculoskeletal system.

On the other hand, pathologies of congenital, degenerative, tumor, infectious and inflammatory deformities are a common cause of consultation in our hospitals and requires a dynamic treatment response, in concordance with technological changes in science and research.

The application of all these concepts in order to improve prognosis of different pathologies, whether traumatic or not inside a community, becomes one of department's main goals.

Another important point is to adequate training from musculoskeletal point of view in the comprehensive training of general practitioners. Also instruction of specialists in orthopedics and traumatology with solid basis for a opportune diagnosis, classification, treatment and management of complications inside a framework of quality and comprehensive knowledge of disease and patient.

Objectives

  • The Program objective is to train a specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology who has adequate knowledge, skills and attitudes to overcome general medical-surgical problems of Musculoskeletal System and Locomotor System.
  • The Program will train suitable specialists in assistance, teaching, administrative and investigative functions inherent to Orthopedic and Traumatology Surgery Specialty, thus they can adequately solve situations that demand their attention, within moral norms and professional ethics.
