Mission

Actively participate in comprehensive undergraduate training of students in the area of Health, based on foundations of the specialty in Family Medicine. Also, to educate and train human beings as specialists in Family Medicine with humanistic vocation and clinical excellence for integral people care from a holistic, bio-psycho-social-cultural and spiritual perspective. Capable of addressing main needs in health and disease in individual, family and social scope, with a complex inter-relational systemic vision in welfare search.

Likewise, the Department must evaluate, generate and spread knowledge related to scientific and philosophical bases of the Family Medicine Specialty at local, national and international level.

The academic and care training is done at highest level through various specialties and medical sub-specialties in most prevalent pathologies in the community. In addition, we seek development and construction of knowledge, skills and specific Family Medicine Specialty problems in fields of Integral Health-Disease, Human Communication, Pedagogy, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and Culture, with an inter and transdisciplinary approach.

The development of self-reflexive capacities are constantly stimulated through acquisition of logical, epistemological and epidemiological tools and their integration in critical evaluation of scientific knowledge and development of quantitative and qualitative research projects.

It is a continuous formation with permanent and periodic self-assessment, using the pedagogy of learning-doing, learning to learn and learning-researching, applying a modular and flexible curriculum aimed at students of the University of Valle Faculty of Health with professors that use the different ways provided by the University and/or achieved through self-management.

The pedagogical values that rule this training are respect for difference, love and understanding, with active participation of student.

The Department of Family Medicine also has as mission to establish and promote links with health service providers that allow connections of the graduates with job opportunities, as well as to establish arrangements to train not graduated physicians in the Specialty of Family Medicine. These connections should allow professionals specialized in Family Medicine to develop their work in the direction that their principles demand. Therefore, they can perform as professors and/or specialist physician, medical auditors, administrative leaders in different spaces: university teaching, health system and society, with high effectiveness and efficiency to contribute to sustained improvement of individual and collective quality of life in Colombian society.

Objectives

  • To train family physicians with great comprehensive and holistic resolution capacity, for direct attention to individuals, families and communities, in biological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual aspects of the disease-health process. Train physicians that handle prevalent problems of their population in charge, in aspects of health promotion and prevention levels, and that develop teach, research and administrative activities.
  • To train specialists physicians in family medicine with a permanent attitude for research, generation and practical application of knowledge, always accessible to the individuals, family and community, recognizing the comprehensive paradigm.
  • To train family doctors to provide services at different levels of care, with an emphasis on ambulatory attention.
  • To achieve that the specialist apply principles of family medicine to adapt services organizationally and administratively inside the integral paradigm.
  • To prepare specialist to perform teaching at formal and non-formal levels.
  • To develop in the family physician capacities to design, administer and execute plans, programs and projects of medicine and family health.
  • To make possible that program graduates develop capacities and research skills with a holistic approach to generate knowledge that contributes to progress and advancement of the discipline and practice of Family Medicine, applied to health services and needs of population.
  • To promote participation of family physicians in general audit and prospective audit in new organizational forms for provision of services and teamwork.
  • To provide knowledge, methods and instruments of communication sciences, necessary to understand their communicative processes and those of their attention subjects.
  • To complement the perspective of clinical, informative, biological and instrumental intervention, with arguments that came from social sciences, for a holistic understanding of health problems of their attention subjects.
  • Through development of plans and activities, to realize integration of knowledge and skills provided by foundation and deepening of clinic.
  • To train a graduate who always acts within ethical and bioethical values, has skills and attitudes in teaching, research, self-evaluation and improvement, as a person and as a professional.
