Actively participate in comprehensive undergraduate training of students in the area of Health, based on foundations of the specialty in Family Medicine. Also, to educate and train human beings as specialists in Family Medicine with humanistic vocation and clinical excellence for integral people care from a holistic, bio-psycho-social-cultural and spiritual perspective. Capable of addressing main needs in health and disease in individual, family and social scope, with a complex inter-relational systemic vision in welfare search.
Likewise, the Department must evaluate, generate and spread knowledge related to scientific and philosophical bases of the Family Medicine Specialty at local, national and international level.
The academic and care training is done at highest level through various specialties and medical sub-specialties in most prevalent pathologies in the community. In addition, we seek development and construction of knowledge, skills and specific Family Medicine Specialty problems in fields of Integral Health-Disease, Human Communication, Pedagogy, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and Culture, with an inter and transdisciplinary approach.
The development of self-reflexive capacities are constantly stimulated through acquisition of logical, epistemological and epidemiological tools and their integration in critical evaluation of scientific knowledge and development of quantitative and qualitative research projects.
It is a continuous formation with permanent and periodic self-assessment, using the pedagogy of learning-doing, learning to learn and learning-researching, applying a modular and flexible curriculum aimed at students of the University of Valle Faculty of Health with professors that use the different ways provided by the University and/or achieved through self-management.
The pedagogical values that rule this training are respect for difference, love and understanding, with active participation of student.
The Department of Family Medicine also has as mission to establish and promote links with health service providers that allow connections of the graduates with job opportunities, as well as to establish arrangements to train not graduated physicians in the Specialty of Family Medicine. These connections should allow professionals specialized in Family Medicine to develop their work in the direction that their principles demand. Therefore, they can perform as professors and/or specialist physician, medical auditors, administrative leaders in different spaces: university teaching, health system and society, with high effectiveness and efficiency to contribute to sustained improvement of individual and collective quality of life in Colombian society.
